How to read a range card (DOPE chart)
A range card (or DOPE chart) lists the scope correction for each distance. This walks through every column - range, velocity, drop, elevation, wind and lead - and how to use one quickly on the clock.
What a range card is
A range card — also called a DOPE chart (“Data On Previous Engagements”) — is a table that tells you, for each distance, how much to adjust the scope so the bullet lands where you aim. It turns a trajectory into something you can read and dial in a few seconds. You can build one from predicted data in the calculator and then correct it with real observations.
The columns
| Range | Distance to target, in yards or metres. Rows are usually every 100 units, or a custom list of the distances you actually shoot. |

| Velocity | Remaining bullet speed at that range. Watch for the point it approaches the speed of sound (~1125 fps / 340 m/s) — past there the solution gets unreliable. |
| Drop | How far the bullet has fallen below the line of sight, in inches or cm. Informational — you don't dial inches, you dial the angular value. |
| Elevation (come-up) | The angular correction you dial or hold to hit at that range, in MIL or MOA . This is the number you actually use. It is zero at your zero distance and grows with range. |
| Wind | Sideways correction for a reference crosswind (often 10 mph full value). Scale it: a 5 mph wind is half, a 45° wind is roughly half, a 20 mph wind is double. |
| Lead / time of flight | Some cards show bullet flight time, used to work out how far to lead a moving target. |
| Spin drift / aero-jump | Small lateral offsets from bullet spin and crosswind, only broken out on long-range cards. |
Using it on the clock
- Range the target. Everything keys off distance.
- Find the row at or just past that range; interpolate between rows if you need to.
- Dial or hold the elevation value. If dialing, remember to return to zero afterwards.
- Read the wind, judge the actual speed and angle, scale the card's figure, and hold or dial it into the wind.
- Break the shot, spot the impact, correct in the same units and update the card if the prediction was off.
A predicted card gets you a first-round hit zone; the version you trust is the one you have confirmed. Keep the corrected numbers in your logbook so each range day improves the card.
Worked example
Target at 550 yards. Your card shows 3.6 MIL at 500 and 4.5 MIL at 600, so 550 is about 4.0 MIL — dial 40 clicks up. Wind column says 1.4 MIL for 10 mph; you judge a 12 o'clock-to-3 wind at ~8 mph, call it 0.6 MIL, hold into the wind.
